Stone
Stone is one of a number of villages which formed along the Dartford to Gravesend Road. While the Parish church, St Mary’s, traces its history back to the 13th Century, many remains have been found suggesting that this area was populated during the Iron Age, including pottery, brooches and farming equipment. Stone is also home to Stone Castle, an 12th Century castle made almost entirely from flint, much of which was constructed during the reign of King John. The only surviving section of the castle is the 40ft high rectangular tower.

Like surrounding towns, Stone Parish was home to a number of mines and quarries, many of which helped serve the cement industry. While almost all of this industry has now departed the area, the former quarries are under going major redevelopment. One such quarry is now playing host to the Bluewater shopping complex, the largest such centre in Europe. As part of the Thames Gateway Development, Stone is also seeing a large expansion in housing, with some 700 houses are being constructed in the former quarry located next to Bluewater.
