Southfleet & Horton Kirby Compromising South Darenth and Horton Kirby, the Parish was formerly known as Horton Kirby Parish. The name Horton Kirby appears to mean simply muddy farmstead. Like other local villages, Horton Kirby appears in the Doomsday Book, though it was referred to as Hortune. By 1346, the village appears to have passed into the hands of the de Kyrkeby family as was know as Horton Kyrkeby.
