Stoate welcomes moves by UK Government to develop a High Voltage Direct Current power grid
Monday, 11 January 2010

Dartford MP, Dr Howard Stoate, has expressed his delight at recent moves by the Government to develop plans for a European wide High Volatage Direct Current (HVDC) network allowing member countries to contribute different forms of renewable energy in meeting one another's power needs.

Britain, along with European Union partners Germany, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and Ireland have agreed to begin the process of developing a plan to build a network allowing each nation to contribute power to the grid, taking advantage of each nation's different power generating potential.  Whilst countries such as Britain and Denmark can potentially generate large amounts of wind power, others such as Spain and Germany can contribute solar energy and Scandanavian countries including Norway offer massive amounts of hydro-electric power.

Dr Stoate has long championed the cause of a HVDC network through his work with DESERTEC, a German led initiative seeking to harness the energy generating potential of the North African desert through the use of Concentrated Solar Power technology.  Dr Stoate is due to speak at a Parliamentary event held by DESERTEC at which representatives from the Morrocan government will also be addressing.
