Longfield, New Barn & Hartley The Parish comprises three villages, the oldest of which is Longfield, located on the ancient road between Meopham and Dartford. The village of Longfield is first referred to in the Doomsday Book as Langafelda, though evidence from excavations at Pinden Quarry suggest that there was a settlement in the area at least 2000 years ago. Hartley is also mentioned in the Doomsday Book, made up of 15 families and 3 slaves at the time. St Mary Magdalene Church, located within the Parish holds the remains of Archdeacon Plume, the founder of the Plumean Professorship of Astronomy at Cambridge University, a position later held by the world renowned Professor Stephen Hawking. |
