Transport Minister confirms 20p tolls for Dartford residents
Dartford MP, Dr Howard Stoate, has given an enthusiastic welcome to today’s announcement by Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly that Dartford borough residents will be given a discount of nearly 90% when the new Dartford River Crossing Tolls come into force later this year.  Under the new toll scheme non Dartford car drivers using the Dartford River Crossing will pay a toll of £1.50 whilst Dartford Borough residents who have applied for a special Discount Dart tag will pay just 20p per journey.

Today’s announcement is a victory for Dr Stoate’s long-running ‘Fair Toll for Dartford’ campaign which called for a 90% discount for residents. The MP has campaigned vigorously for a discount arguing that Dartford residents are entitled to a major discount in view of the pollution and congestion generated in the area by the crossing and the A282. He has called for Dartford residents to be given the same 90% discount that residents living within the London Congestion Charge Zone receive.

Dr Stoate said; “This is great news for Dartford residents. I’m delighted that Ruth Kelly has responded so positively to my campaign and recognised the need for a major local discount approaching 90%. We have to put up with all the congestion and pollution that the crossing causes so it’s only right that we get something back in return. It is a huge saving for Dartford residents – particularly for those who work in Essex and use the crossing on a daily basis.”

Notes

The discount scheme will work in the following way:

Every Dartford Borough resident will be eligible to apply for a special Dartford Residents Discount Dart tag. This will entitle you to a special discounted toll of just 20p. Compared to the new toll of £1.50 this represents a discount of almost 90% for Dartford residents.

As with the standard Dart tag the Discount Dart tag scheme will work on a pre-payment basis. Everyone who registers for the Discount Dart tag will be asked to put a minimum of £10 credit on their Discount Dart tag upfront (which will provide enough credit for 50 journeys). Residents will then be able to top up their credit level as and when they need to throughout the year.

Residents will need to re-register for the Discount Dart tag scheme every year and put a minimum of £10 credit on their tag. This mandatory re-registration procedure is designed to ensure that only eligible Dartford residents hold Discount Dart tags.

The discount will only be available to residents that have a Discount Dart tag. It won’t be possible to receive a cash discount at the toll booths.
