Stoate backs Leigh Academy's Green Power bid Dartford MP, Dr Howard Stoate, visited the Leigh Technology Academy yesterday to meet members of Team 24/7, one of six teams from the Academy that are building an electric car in order to compete in a national electric car racing competition for schools organised by ‘Greenpower’. In addition to competing in the competition, the members of Team 24/7 are building the car as part of their AS level engineering course. Team 24/7 approached Dr Stoate at the start of the school year to ask for his help in raising £700 to fund the project. The MP agreed to help by writing to local businesses to see if they would be willing to sponsor the team. Firms agreeing to back the team will have their logo placed on the body of the team’s final production car. The Greenpower competition, which is sponsored by Ford and Serco, has been set up in order to promote science and technology in schools and to encourage more young people to seek careers in the field once they leave full-time education. Over a hundred teams from schools and colleges across the country are taking part in the competition. Dr Stoate said; “The competition is a great idea. It’s no surprise that it’s captured the imagination of so many schools and colleges up and down the country. Not only does it encourage young people to take an interest in science and technology and develop their engineering skills but it’s also helped to promote greater interest in green technology.” “I was really pleased therefore to be able to support Team 24. They’ve done a great job so far and I look forward to seeing how the car performs in competition.” Notes More information about the Greenpower competition can be found by visiting www.greenpower.co.uk |
