Dartford MP raises case of local resident held in India with British High Commissioner Dartford MP, Dr Howard Stoate, raised the case of Dartford resident, Patrick Malluzzo, who is currently in prison in India, with the British High Commissioner to India during a visit to India last week.
Dr Stoate, who was visiting India as part of a UK parliamentary delegation, took up Mr Malluzzo’s case during a meeting with the High Commissioner in New Delhi. Mr Malluzzo, who was convicted on a drug related offence, maintains his innocence and is currently awaiting a court date for his appeal. Dr Stoate used the meeting to ask the High Commissioner to take a personal interest in the case and to ask for Mr Malluzzo’s appeal to take place as soon as possible. He also raised the possibility of arranging for Mr Malluzzo to be transferred to a prison in the UK.
Patrick Malluzzo has been in prison in Kota Central Jail in Rajasthan in India since his arrest on 30 January 2004 at Mumbai Airport on drugs smuggling charges. Mr Malluzzo was found guilty of the charges against him on 17 July 2006 and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment plus a fine of 100,000 rupees. He is currently preparing an appeal against his sentence and is waiting for a judge to be appointed to hear the case.
