MP urges Dartford residents to back his 'Fair toll for Dartford' campaign
Dartford MP, Dr Howard Stoate, has urged Dartford residents to give their support to his ‘Fair Toll for Dartford’ campaign.

The campaign calls on the Department for Transport to give Dartford residents a 90% discount on the Dartford Crossing Tolls and for extra funding from the Tolls to be set aside each year for local transport schemes in Dartford.

Launching the 'Fair Toll for Dartford' campaign earlier this year Dr Stoate said:

"The only circumstances in which I would be prepared to tolerate the retention of the tolls would be if Dartford residents were to be given a 90% discount on the revised charge when using the crossing - the same percentage reduction on the London congestion charge that is offered to London residents living within the congestion charge zone - and if extra revenue from the tolls were to be set aside for local transport projects in Dartford."

"Not only would these concessions bring to an end the unfair treatment of local drivers but they would provide an appropriate form of compensation for the severe traffic congestion and air pollution that the Dartford Crossing helps to generate in this area."

The MP is due to present Transport Minister, Stephen Ladyman, with the responses to his campaign at the House of Commons on 8 March – the day before the Department for Transport’s consultation on the proposed changes to the charging regime at the Dartford crossing comes to an end.

Dr Stoate has already received nearly 1,000 responses from local residents in support of his campaign since its launch 3 weeks ago. He wants to ensure that as many local residents as possible however give their backing to his campaign before 8 March.

“The response I’ve received from residents so far has been incredible, and I’m grateful to everyone who has taken the trouble to write to me in support of the campaign. It is important though that I hear from as many residents as possible: the more support I get, the greater our chances are of persuading the Department to give us our discount;” said Dr Stoate.
