MP calls for better screening of A282 Tunnel Approach
Dartford MP, Dr Howard Stoate, has written to the Highways Agency this week to demand better screening alongside the A282 Dartford Crossing Approach Road.

Concerns about the lack of proper screening were put to the MP at a meeting he held earlier this week with residents of Brent Way in Stone. Residents complained that when traffic on the A282 is heavy, they often found it impossible even to open their windows because of the level of pollutants in the air.

Permission to redevelop the former KCC owned Tylers centre at the end of Brent Way as housing was also refused recently because of the high level of pollutants in the air.

“Ultimately the only real solution to the air quality problem is to build another Thames Crossing further east along the river. This would help to relieve much of the pressure on the current Dartford Crossing and make life more tolerable for residents living next to the crossing.”

“We can and should be doing more however to improve conditions for existing residents living alongside the crossing approach road at the moment. There are big gaps in the screening in this area and residents have next to nothing in the way of protection. The problem is made worse by the fact that prevailing wind is from the west which means that residents living east of the A282 bear the brunt of the pollution.”

“The Dartford Air Quality Action Plan estimates that improved screening along the A282 could help to cut Nitrogen Dioxide levels in the surrounding area by between 30-40%. Virtually nothing has been done however to improve matters since it was published two or three years ago and it is high time the Highways Agency took action.”
