Government agrees to massive Dartford tolls discount for local residents Dartford MP, Dr Howard Stoate, has called today’s announcement that Dartford drivers are to be given a major discount on the Dartford crossing toll, “a great day for Dartford”.“I’m delighted that the Minister has responded so positively to my ‘Fair Toll for Dartford’ campaign and accepted the case for a local discount for Dartford drivers. We have to put up with all the congestion and pollution that the crossing causes so it is right that we get something back in return for this”, said Dr Stoate. “The fact that over 1,300 Dartford residents were prepared to support my campaign for a 90% discount for Dartford drivers has undoubtedly helped to persuade the Government to agree in principle to a local discount.” “Today’s decision is particularly good news for residents who commute across the river to work, and for Dartford and Thurrock residents that use the crossing to visit Lakeside and Bluewater,” added the MP. The announcement by Transport Minister, Stephen Ladyman MP, at the Dartford crossing this morning, means that all Dartford residents will be eligible for a discount when the revised toll charge scheme comes into operation in January 2008. The exact level of the discount is due to be announced later this year but the Minister has promised that he will try to ensure that it is as ‘close as possible’ to the 90% discount that Dr Stoate, together with Thurrock MPs, Andrew Mackinlay and Angela Smith have been campaigning for. Notes Dr Stoate’s call for a 90% discount for Dartford drivers is based on the fact that residents living within the London Congestion Charge Zone – the only other congestion charge scheme in operation in the South east – are entitled to a 90% discount. |
