Stoate condemns plans to close primary school Dartford MP, Dr Howard Stoate, has condemned a proposal by Kent County Council to close Darenth Community Primary School in 2007.“This proposal has been put forward without any consultation with the community or local stakeholders and without any thought of the impact that it will have on the community,” said the MP. “Closing this school would rip the heart out of Lane End. Darenth Primary has played a pivotal role in the life of this community for generations and to close it now would not only deny local children the opportunity to attend a local school, but it would also deprive residents of a vital community resource.” “The County Council talks about the importance of giving parents choice and of encouraging children to walk to school, yet here it is proposing the close a much cherished primary school and force parents to send their children to schools miles out of the area. It makes no sense whatasoever and makes a mockery of their pledge to create sustainable communities in Kent.” “What I find particularly strange about this proposal is that it comes at a time when the school’s results are improving and considerable amounts of money are being spent on improving its facilities and buildings. According to the last set of primary school league tables after all it is one of the most improved schools in the country.” “I have assured the Headteacher that I will be fighting this proposal tooth and nail and I am quite sure that the school will have the full support of the community and every other body with any influence in the area.” |
