MP welcomes drop in the number of abandoned vehicles Dartford MP, Dr Howard Stoate, has welcomed figures showing a sharp decline in the number of abandoned vehicles found in Dartford. In answer to a Parliamentary Question tabled by Dr Stoate, DEFRA Minister, Ben Bradshaw, revealed that the number of abandoned vehicles removed and destroyed in Dartford has fallen from a high of 706 vehicles in 2002/02 to 121 vehicles in 2004/05.The fall in the number of vehicles that have been abandoned has been reflected across the whole of Kent, which every authority, from Ashford to Tunbridge Wells, reporting a substantial drop between 2002/03 to 2004/05. “I’m pleased to see such a significant drop in the number of abandoned vehicles in Kent. Abandoned vehicles are not only extremely unsightly and potentially hazardous, but the cost of disposing of them is a considerable drain on the resources of local authorities,” said Dr Stoate. “The rise in the price of scrap metal is clearly partly responsible for this drop, but other factors such as free car scrapping schemes and amnesties, have also played their part. The new vehicle licensing rule which states that owners are expected to pay their vehicle tax until they inform the DVLA that they have either sold, transferred, scrapped or exported their vehicles, has also helped,” added the MP. |
