EDM 946 - Detention of Marie-Therese Nlandu 21.02.2007
Corbyn, Jeremy
That this House notes with concern allegations of irregularities in the detention in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) of former presidential candidate and party leader Marie-Thérèse Nlandu, declared an Amnesty International Prisoner of Conscience, and in particular her ongoing trial before a military tribunal in contravention of Article 156 of the Constitution of the DRC and the principles set out by the African Commission on Human and People's Rights; notes that the tribunal could impose the death penalty, and has done so in the past; calls on the government of the DRC to guarantee that her case and those of her associates are treated fairly, quickly, and according to due process and international norms; expresses concern over reports of Marie-Thérèse Nlandu's deteriorating health and urges the Congolese authorities to allow her the necessary access to medical care; and calls on the British Government to raise her case at the highest level with the Congolese government. |
