Residents overwhelmingly reject plans for road through Central Park Counting took place at the end of March at the Methodist Church in Spital Street in Dartford of the first 10% of returns from the Park Road Referendum organised by Dr Howard Stoate. The count, which was staffed by volunteers from the community, was overseen by the Methodist Minister, the Reverend Tim Crome.Ballot papers from 7,068 residents – approximately 10% of the Dartford electorate – have now been returned to Dr Stoate. Of the 7068 returns, 6460 opposed the park road (91.4%) 504 were in favour of the road (7.1%) and 104 (1.5%) were deemed invalid by the independent adjudicator. “As 10% of the ballot papers have now been returned to me, I thought it would be an opportune moment to carry out an interim count to get a snapshot of what people in Dartford think about the park road,” said Dr Stoate. “Of the ballot papers counted today, an overwhelming majority were opposed to the road through the park. Although there is still a long way to go, the significance of today’s results should not be underestimated. The results represent a substantial cross-section of the community and as such cannot be ignored by the Council.” “This is only the start however; I can assure anyone in the borough who has yet to receive a ballot paper that we will be getting around to them in the months ahead. If anyone has a ballot paper that hasn’t been collected however or wants to volunteer to help the referendum then they can ring the referendum Hotline on 079 3194 9544,” said Dr Stoate. |
